What the gateway does
When a customer enters card details at your checkout, the gateway captures those details securely, passes them for authorisation, and returns an approved or declined response to your website — usually within a couple of seconds.
Crucially, a well-implemented gateway means sensitive card data does not sit on your own systems.
Hosted versus integrated checkouts
A hosted checkout redirects the customer to a payment page provided by the gateway. It is simpler to implement and shifts more of the security burden away from your site.
An integrated checkout keeps the customer on your own pages for a more seamless experience, but places more responsibility on how your site is built and maintained.
Authentication and declines
Additional customer authentication steps are a normal part of online card payments in the UK and are designed to reduce fraud. A checkout that handles these steps smoothly on mobile will lose fewer sales than one that does not.
Questions worth asking
How does the checkout behave on a phone? What happens when a payment fails? How are refunds handled? How quickly are funds settled? These practical questions usually matter more than the feature list.
